The task may seem repetitive and routine, yet each time it requires a different approach - not only because of the horse or rider, but above all because of the wide variety of saddle designs on the market and the specific end result we want to achieve. Every saddle fitter knows what a flocker and an extractor are used for: the former is a tool for inserting, distributing and adjusting flocking, while the latter helps remove old material before reflocking, repairs or alterations.

How do you choose the right tool?


Not all flockers are created equal - and not because of their quality, manufacturer or materials, although the latter have a significant effect on working comfort. The most important differences are the tool’s size, shape and weight, as well as the task facing the saddle fitter when a client’s saddle lands on the workbench. A straight tool offers predictable guidance, a curved one helps reach corners and work along edges, while a flexible one can be adapted to the specific route through a panel. Let us clear up the uncertainty. This article focuses on one question: which flocker should you choose? First, however, let us establish the right way of thinking. Instead of asking, “Which flocker is best?”, consider which flocker is right for the particular task you need to perform.


What is a flocker used for?


A flocker, also known as a flocking iron - or, more broadly among beginners and those unfamiliar with the terminology, as a saddle fitting tool - is used to insert, distribute and adjust the filling material inside saddle panels. Its serrated tip helps catch the fibres and move them in a controlled way. This allows the saddle fitter to distribute the flocking, even out its arrangement and work precisely within a selected area of the panel.

The shape of the shaft determines the path followed by the tool. Its length affects its reach, the amount of space required to use it and the level of control over the tip. This is why a professional kit will usually contain more than one flocker.

Flocker versus extractor: two different stages of the job


In general terms, a flocker is an insertion and manipulation tool: it allows the flocking to be placed, distributed, moved and shaped. An extractor, also known as a de-flocker or de-flocking iron, performs the opposite task. It is used to loosen and remove old flocking from a panel, particularly when the fibres have become compacted, are distributed unevenly or need to be replaced completely.

Removing the old material allows the panel to be inspected more thoroughly and prepared for fresh flocking. An extractor does not replace a flocker - the two tools complement one another at different stages of the job. Calm, controlled movements and light pressure are essential during extraction. Scraping too aggressively can stretch the panel covering or damage its internal components.


Material and weight: what really matters during use?


The acid-resistant stainless steel used in fixed-shape models, including the extractors, provides rigidity and repeatability. The shaft does not change its geometry during normal use, so the movement of the hand is transferred directly to the serrated tip. This is a good choice when a stable path, perceptible resistance and precise control of pressure are important.

The aluminium shaft used in the Flex models is malleable: it can be formed into the required curve or bend, yet remains sufficiently rigid to retain the selected shape during use. The tool is delivered straight, allowing the user to adapt it to their own needs.

The generally low weight of the tools, and the resulting reduction in strain on the hands and wrists during longer periods of work, is an undeniable advantage. In practice, ergonomics should be assessed as a whole: the material, length, balance and wrist position all matter, as does whether the shape of the tool allows the intended area to be reached without forcing the hand into an uncomfortable angle.

The varnished solid-wood handle makes the tool easier to guide securely and separates the hand from the metal working section. During repeated, precise movements, a comfortable grip is just as important as the weight of the tool itself.

Straight flockers: control and versatility


A straight flocker is a natural choice for general work with flocking and for distributing it evenly in areas that can be reached along a straight path. Its fixed geometry provides clear feedback through the hand and makes repeated movements easier. It is a reliable core tool for both more extensive panel work and adjustments made through an easily accessible flocking slot.


The shop offers three lengths:


  • S01 - approximately 30 cm overall, with a 25 cm shaft. It is most comfortable when working close to the flocking slot, inside smaller panels and on localised, precise adjustments. The shorter shaft is easy to control when extra reach is unnecessary.

  • S02 - approximately 40 cm overall, with a 35 cm shaft. It offers the most versatile compromise between reach and control, making it a practical starting point for an everyday toolkit.

  • S03 - approximately 50 cm overall, with a 45 cm shaft. It provides greater reach when working in deeper or larger areas of a panel, particularly when access is only possible from a single, more distant point.


The longest model is not automatically the most versatile. If a shorter tool can comfortably reach the intended area, it will often provide a more comfortable hand position and more precise control of the tip.

Curved flockers: corners, edges and a winding path


A curved flocker carries the tip beyond the straight axis of the flocking slot. It is useful when flocking needs to be distributed into corners, shaped along the edge of a panel, guided into the shoulder area or moved around internal geometry that restricts access with a straight tool. The fixed curve of the steel shaft makes it possible to return to the same path repeatedly without reshaping the tool each time or placing unnecessary strain on the hand, wrist or flocking slots.



The core range includes:

  • C01 - approximately 30 cm overall, with a 25 cm shaft. It works well for precise tasks close to the flocking slot and inside smaller, confined areas.

  • C02 - approximately 40 cm overall, with a 35 cm shaft. It combines useful reach with comfortable control and is a sensible choice for many typical jobs involving panel edges and corners.

  • C03 - approximately 50 cm overall, with a 45 cm shaft. It is intended for areas farther away from the flocking slot that need to be reached along a curved path.

The range also includes the SC01, measuring approximately 50 cm overall with a 45 cm shaft. Its more pronounced, specialised curve extends the range of possible applications where a standard curve does not provide convenient access.

When choosing a curved tool, consider not only its reach but also the direction of the curve in relation to your hand and the flocking slot. The most comfortable model will be the one that allows you to guide the tip without twisting your wrist excessively.

Flexible flockers: one tool, many possible shapes


The Flex range combines individual shaping with controlled rigidity. The aluminium shaft can be bent by hand to move around flocking that is already in place, follow unusual panel geometry or position the tip at a particular angle. Once formed, the shaft retains its selected shape during use.


This is particularly convenient for people working with a variety of saddle constructions, out in the field or anywhere it is difficult to predict the curve that will be required for the next saddle. Rather than replacing every steel tool, the Flex fills the gap between a straight flocker and one with a permanent curve.


Three sizes are available:


  • FLX01 - approximately 30 cm overall, with a 25 cm shaft. Best for close, precise work requiring a small, individually formed curve.

  • FLX02 - approximately 40 cm overall, with a 35 cm shaft. A versatile option offering plenty of freedom to shape the tool without sacrificing comfortable control.

  • FLX03 - approximately 50 cm overall, with a 45 cm shaft. It provides the greatest reach and allows longer, gentle curves to be formed for access to more distant parts of a panel.

The flexible shaft should be shaped gradually along the required length, avoiding a sharp kink at any single point. Do not bend the tool by holding the wooden handle in one hand and the shaft in the other; the safest and most effective method is to hold the shaft itself with both hands. If the task primarily requires maximum rigidity and perfectly repeatable geometry, a fixed steel model may be more convenient.



Extractors: the proverbial give-and-take


Over time, old flocking may become compacted, hard or unevenly distributed. When a complete replacement of the flocking, a repair or a thorough panel inspection is planned, a tool is needed to loosen the fibres and gradually guide them out through the opening. This is precisely what an extractor is designed to do.

The solid steel shaft provides stability when working with material that offers resistance. The serrated tip helps catch the fibres, but effective work should not mean using excessive force. It is most comfortable to use short, smooth movements, periodically remove the released material from the opening and continually monitor the condition of the panel.

  • DEF02 - approximately 40 cm overall, with a 35 cm shaft. It offers a versatile compromise between reach and control, making it suitable for many common tasks involving the loosening and removal of flocking.

  • DEF03 - approximately 50 cm overall, with a 45 cm shaft. This long, straight extractor provides greater reach inside larger or deeper panels, particularly when material needs to be removed from an area farther away from the flocking slot.

  • DEF0C - approximately 50 cm overall, with a 45 cm shaft. Its curved geometry directs the tip beyond the straight axis of the flocking slot, providing more comfortable access to areas where a straight extractor would force the hand into an unfavourable angle or place excessive pressure on the flocking slots.

As with flockers, greater length does not always mean greater convenience. The short DEF01 is easier to use on material located close to the flocking slot, while the DEF03 only has an advantage when its additional reach is genuinely required. The DEF0C should be selected not simply because of its length, but because of the route needed to reach the flocking.

How do you choose your first flocker or extractor?


If you are building a basic toolkit, begin with the work you perform most often:


  • choose a flocker when material needs to be inserted, distributed, moved or shaped;

  • choose an extractor when old or compacted flocking needs to be loosened and removed before the next stage of the job;

  • choose a straight model when you need a stable, versatile tool for general flocking distribution;

  • choose a curved model when you most often work in corners, along edges or in areas that are not visible along the straight axis of the flocking slot;

  • choose a flexible model when you work with many saddle constructions and want to adapt the tool’s path to a particular panel;

  • choose a straight extractor when the fibres can be guided out along the axis of the flocking slot, and the curved DEF0C when access along a curved path is required;

  • choose a 30 cm tool for work close to the flocking slot and minor adjustments, 40 cm as a versatile everyday size and 50 cm when you genuinely need greater reach.


For many saddle fitters, a practical starting point will be a 40 cm flocker and the straight DEF02 extractor, followed by shorter, longer or curved tools chosen according to actual needs. Ultimately, the best tool is not the longest or most elaborate one, but the one that allows you to reach the intended area with a short, controlled movement and without placing unnecessary strain on your wrist.
